This approach helps each student find their own groove while being exposed to multiple styles of drumming.
About the Instructor
Robert Elchert has over 20 years of drumming experience as a teacher, recording artist, and performing musician in various parts of the country. Over the years, he has won awards including a scholarship offer from Berklee College of Music’s World Scholarship Tour.
He has studied with many great teachers including Jim Bollero (South Bend and Elkhart Symphony), Brian Scott (Eugene and Portland, OR. Symphony), and Mel Brown (Motown, NW Jazz Favorite) and had lessons with drummers like Paul Wertico (Pat Metheny, solo), Byron “Wookie” Landham (Joey DeFrancesco), and Jon Fishman (Phish). He also studied Brazilian Samba drumming from Brian Davis (Lions of Batucada and Pink Martini).
He spent eight years in the Pacific Northwest where he majored in Jazz Studies and International Studies at Portland State University. While living in Eugene and Portland, he played in a variety of touring and recording bands.
In 2006, Robert moved to Chicago to attend the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration. While in graduate school, Robert hit the local scene with several different bands including Bill Smith and Herbert Wiser. He also started Bronzeville Drums, which was an after-school program in Chicago.
After almost ten years of teaching and playing in the Chicago area, Robert and his wife Emily moved to Kalamazoo, MI. He currently lives, works, and plays in the Kalamazoo and Chicago areas. You can check out some of his drumming here.
